For a while I have been ruminating on a post about pants. But I was never sure where to start and end. We touched on not-exactly-capri-pants last week. We covered low slinger denim earlier this year. We’ve worn pants with dresses. But the problem is, there are just so many great pants out there to love. So where I landed this week was a pretty straightforward appreciation letter to our bottom halves.
Thank you, pants. Couldn’t do outfits without you.
Pants have become a whole personal style category of their own. What used to be the clothing item you put on because you can’t leave the house without pants, has secured a rightful place as ideal outfit maker.
And for good reason. These days, we are being challenged to look beyond “trousers for work” and “denim for weekends” and instead to pants that range from beautiful to slightly strange to comically oversized to completely see-through, and often, all four at the same time.
I’ve embraced the Golden Pant Era, by accident (or good marketing…) Spending the better part of the last year unknowingly shifting how I get dressed. Building, almost always, around the pants first. Layering personality into outfits from the BOTTOMS UP. And blissfully enjoying working from that direction all the way along.
It’s been a labour of love. Prioritizing pants takes a particular level of patience. If you are like me, you’ll find a year’s worth of time, effort and clothing budget spent on finding pants that make you look like a fisherman, hunting for jeans that feels trend forward without exposing your midriff in broad daylight, and dodging kids-ketchup-hand-grenades to protect your crispy white linens.

All the while, also reframing the pain-staking process of trying on pants to recognize that each order, return (there will be many), and reorder gather necessary pant intel for the shapes, silhouettes, and colors that fit best into your life and style.

But a worthy pursuit because, simply put, pants are the thing in your closet that make all the other things work together.
So when you find the pants, don’t stop there! Use them as your jumping off point for all the other pieces you love. Breathe fresh life into your classic black or white tee or button up. Or go the other route and let your pants be the splash of weird that make getting dressed fun.

Maybe let them inspire you to pair with equal eccentricity. Somewhere along all those lines is what I am thinking about….

Not to mention, the ‘stack world, which leaves no pant unturned.
and both rolled out great easy living pant picks here and here last week. With that, slightly all over the place but we made it to the end. A great big thanks again to pants for their contribution to this letter. And to all of you who make my days more fun.
To my fellow Canadians, happy belated Canada Day! And American friends, happy fourth of July!
